North Coast Naturals Hemp Protein Product Review

North Coast Natural Hemp Protein Powder

On my visit home to Vancouver this Christmas I forgot to bring my Vega Shake and Go Protein that I usually have for breakfast every morning. I went to Planet Organic which is close to my parents place to go buy some as I really did want to stick to my eating regiment over the holidays. Sadly they were out so I decided to try a new type of protein that I had actually been wanting to try for a while – Hemp Protein.

I had someone recommend this particular brand – North Coast Naturals Organic Hemp Protein -  to me quite a while back on a forum where we were discussing protein “pill” supplements. I have stayed away from hemp protein for quite a while now mostly afraid of how green it looked and I just couldn’t imagine it tasting good at all.

The thing right off the bat is that its about 10 bucks cheaper than my Vega Shake and Go (sorry vega), offers 3g more protein per serving & 3g more fiber and contains 0 sugar.

I love my Vega Shake and Go because I can mix it with nothing else but water and it tastes like chocolaty goodness – But since I only needed something to tie me over for the week in Vancouver I said “why the heck not”.

So – I was RIGHT about the “Green” taste. But since I wasn’t in my usual rush to get out the door by 6am I was able to make some decent shakes with just a few extra ingredients.

A few things you might not know about Hemp Protein from the North Coast Naturals Website:

Hemp is a complete balanced whole food source of protein, fibre and essential healthy fats (EFAs). Our 100% CERTIFIED organic protein is easily digested, animal-free (vegan) and is the best plant source of protein, containing both edestin and albumin proteins, the type our bodies absorb best!

Our undenatured Hemp is 35% higher in protein than hemp flour, helping deliver more amino acids, nature’s building blocks for lean tissue, skin, and healthy hair & nails.

Our Hemp Protein is balanced, it is rich in fibre (8 grams per serving, almost 1/3 your daily need) and rich in EFAs (essential fatty acids, the healthy fats). Each serving delivers 2200 mg omega 3, omega 6 and omega 9 EFAs. Hemp is one of the rare sources of GLA, an omega-6 EFA that is a real powerhouse of help with improving one’s energy and mood.

How did I make my morning smoothies with this GREEN protein?

Not too bad at all I must say. I’ve decided to stick with hemp protein as a staple in my “protein cupboard” and I hope to experiment with it more in different recipes.

Definitely give it a go and don’t be afraid of the “green” taste. It kind of tastes nice knowing that you are doing your body good.

In order to get my three little girls to eat better I sneak North Coast Naturals Hemp Protein into their foods.

I mix maybe a third to half of a cup a half of the protein into a jar of Nutella–enough to make it have a thick consistency that can still be stirred. Then I spread it on bread and top it off with another piece of bread spread with either peanut butter or almond butter. Even my girls’ friends love this version of a PB sandwich!

I live in The States; so it’s unfortunately not as easy to find a store who carries this awesomely nutty-tasting protein powder. That’s why we have the internet, though, eh?

    Awesome and Easy Sample Recipe:

Mix about equal parts of Hemp protein and Nutella, the chocolate-hazlenut spread. It will have a thick consistency but you should still be able to slowly stir it. Eat alone or spread it on a slice of bread and top it off with another piece of bread spread with either peanut butter or almond butter. This is such a delicious version of the PB sandwich–Even my girls’ friends love this! Also, I offer a small rainbow-slew of veggies and dip on the side. And because Nutella is sweet, this meal even satisfies the most discriminating sweet tooth!

    • WOW! This is the BEST idea!! I haven’t been having any lately as I haven’t been in the “Green”smoothie mood but this could definitely be a great way to add some hemp back into my diet! I’ve just been using the Vega Shake and Go Cho-A-Lot the last few weeks as it tastes like chocolate milk when I add it to my lactose free milk!

Thanks for the post – I am going to go buy some Nutella today :-)
