Is this what you picture when you think of "Raw" Food?
When I first heard about the so called “Raw Food Movement”, I pretty much pictured a plate full of cold vegetables that were dull and tasteless. I mean, how many things can you make with un-cooked vegetables? ICK.
Well, it turns out that Raw foodism (or rawism) is the practice of consuming uncooked, unprocessed, and often organic foods as a large percentage of the diet.
However, raw food doesn’t have to only be vegetables. Depending on the type of lifestyle and results desired, raw food diets may include a selection of raw fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds (including sprouted whole grains such as gaba rice), eggs, fish (such as sashimi), meat (such as carpaccio), and non-pasteurized/non-homogenized dairy products (such as raw milk, raw milk cheese, and raw milk yogurt).
Okay, so whats the point? Why take out dairy, gluten & stop cooking food altogether?
What’s the point of all of this and won’t food just be dull and flavorless?
Well, until a few weeks ago it’s something I never really considered. The only knowledge I had came from the episode of Sex in the City where Samantha meets Smith when he’s working at a raw food restaurant. The show did a GREAT job at making it seem like the most unpleasant experience you could ever have.
Then my lovely friend and yoga teacher Dawn Mauricio introduced me to a Montreal restaurant called Crudessence (which is now my new favorite restaurant I might add).
Crudessence is known for it’s living foods and their approach is much more than just “raw” it’s also completely vegan (contains no animal products) and organic AND GLUTEN FREE!
Yes, I’m excited here.
I’ve now tried the Spaghetti, the Om Burger, the key lime pie, MANY of the smoothies and juices, hmmm… I could go on here.Think about that for a second though, what could a gluten-free, vegan, organic burger taste like and what the heck is spaghetti made from? Well, i’m still figuring that stuff out but I can tell you that it’s amazing.
So again, what’s the point of all this – well, with a little research online this is what I discovered about “Rawism” from Yuri Elkaim is one of the world’s leading holistic nutrition and health experts.
Why Eat a Raw Food Diet?
If you’re reading this article, you may be wondering about the benefits of a raw food diet, right? Well, the benefits of eating more raw foods are numerous and once you understand them you’ll probably wonder why you haven’t eaten more raw in the past. You’ll also think twice about eating dead cooked foods ever again.
Raw Foods Give You More Energy
I don’t think I know of a single person who eats at least 80% raw foods who doesn’t enjoy far more energy than the average person. I know that when I transitioned away from eating a diet made up of breads, dairy, and cooked foods, and adopted more of a raw foods diet, my energy went through the roof. And I’m not talking about the quick surge you would get from an espresso but rather long-lasting energy that enables you to do more with less.
For instance, eating raw will allow you to sleep less and have far more energy than you ever thought possible. When I’m eating at least 80% raw, I can easily function on just 4-5 hours of sleep. I literally bounce out of bed and don’t require any naps throughout the day. Oh yeah, did I mention that I workout every single day as well? Sometimes, even twice!
Energizing Enzymes
There are several reasons why a raw food diet will give you more energy. First, raw foods are rich in food enzymes. Enzymes are required for every single reaction in the body. Unfortunately, our bodies only have a finite number of these enzymes, so when we run out, we run out of life! To add to this, when you heat foods above 118 degrees fahrenheit, you destroy the food enzymes that are naturally present in all raw foods. Therefore, if you eat a predominantly cooked foods diet, you’re not getting enough food enzymes, which means that your body will have to produce and use more of its own to digest and metabolize your foods.
The more energy your body needs to divert towards digestion, the less energy you will have for other activities. You will feel more lethargic and tired as your body is trying to breakdown “dead” foods and figure out what to do with them.
So, the food enzymes inherent in raw foods are a big reason for boosting your body’s energy. They are the spark plugs and are intricately related to the next property that make raw foods so energy-boosting.
Life Force
When raw foods are left intact, they are also known as living foods. They are called “living” because they carry an incredible amount of life force.
Now, since every living being has an aura or energy field illuminating from their body, which foods do you think would enhance yours? High energy raw foods or cooked foods that dead? I think we both know the answer.
As I like to say, “eat alive and you will thrive”.
Weight Loss and Beautiful Skin
The other highly sought-after quality of a raw foods diet is its ability to help you lose weight and beautify your skin. Almost all raw foodists have reported losing weight they could never lose. At the same time, they notice an instant improvement in their skin. They look younger and have a natural glow that comes about because of the “living” nature of raw foods, their abundance of enzymes, and of course the plethora of nutrients that are ingested when eating more fruits and vegetables.
You will find it easier to lose weight on a raw food diet because your getting more nutrients and, therefore, your body won’t crave “dead” foods. Second, the enzymes help to breakdown the foods you are eating and excess energy and fat stores in your body. Third, raw foods are water-rich, which helps you feel more satiated, as well as hydrated.
Many of these reasons also help us explain why living foods make you look younger and beautify your skin. Enzymes, life force, water, and high quality nutrients all play a role in natural skin care.
We could talk about the benefits of a raw food diet for hours but the only to truly understand them is to experience them for yourself. So why not take action today and enjoy the health, the body, and the vitality that you deserve!

I was STARVING the other day while I was out shopping and went over to Ambrosia one of my favorite heath food stores conveniently located in the underground pathway.
I just wanted to grab a quick snack and I saw these little snack packs I had never seen before which were in the gluten free section.
What got me was the “Cocoa Kissed” part.
They looked like chocolate covered peanuts however the package said “We’re NOT nuts”.
Very cute and clever and oh wait – by VEGA!!
How did I not know about this! I know ALL the Vega products.
Anyways, so of COURSE I bought them as they claimed to have 13x MORE omega 3′s than Wild Salmon.
So what are Savi Seeds?
According to the SaviSeed.com website they are organic sacha inchi seeds. Sacha inchi seeds are the super food of the ancient Inca peoples. Not just your average seed, sacha inchi seeds also known as the Inca Peanut are native to the Amazon rainforest and have been cultivated and consumed for centuries in Peru. SaviSeeds are the fruit of sacha inchi plants, herbaceous vines that produce star-shaped green pods which yield edible seeds – SaviSeeds.
SaviSeeds are apparently the richest source of Omega 3 on the planet! At 7000mg of heart-healthy Omega 3 per one ounce serving, they offer 13 times more Omega 3 than an ounce of wild salmon.
Since Omega 3 is not naturally produced by the body, it’s essential to consume Omega 3 rich foods like SaviSeed to reduce inflammation and promote heart, joint and mental health , and even help to prevent cancer and disease.
So – they’re good for you! We GET IT!
But what did they taste like?
Well, as I said I bought the ones called “Cocoa Kissed” which meant they were covered in 70% cocoa.
They really did taste like a chocolate covered nut.
I felt like I was doing something bad but I knew that the Omega-3′s were doing my body good.
It cost me $2.99 for the snack sized pack and it contains just 170 calories.
It also has 4g of fiber per 1 oz and 5g of protein…
Ahhhh… how much better can this get!
Give them a try if you get a chance – And remember they are “NOT” nuts :-p

How to Deal
I decided on my walk home today that I wanted to talk about “Insecurity”.
Although at first that might not sound like a fitness topic – It is 100% something that should be discussed.
What is Insecurity?
Well, from one person to the next it could be very different.
Some people are insecure about their bodies – weight, shape of nose, height, etc.
Other people are insecure about their skills or expertise in their chosen fields.
Some people are even insecure about their education or knowledge base.
As I said before – there are many things that can make a person feel insecure.
When you feel insecure however, certain emotions can arise and cause even more unpleasant feelings – jealousy, sadness and even feelings of hate towards people you don’t even know.
The thing that we all have to remember is that negativity breeds negativity and if you are feeling insecure about something it could come out in other ways and affect not just your overall level of happiness but even the happiness of the people that surround you.
What we forget sometimes is that we ALL have our insecurities. Even the people that make a point of putting others down – aka. “Bullies” – They are THE MOST insecure people around and that is their way of dealing with it.
I hear some of my most in-shape and beautiful clients complain about their insecurities about their physicalities. In my eyes, and in yours – we may see them as perfect.
In their eyes, they may only see their flaws.
They compare themselves to the person working out next to them.
“I wish I had her calves, I bet she had liposuction”…. “Look at his biceps – he MUST take steroids!”
The judgments begin to fly.
This is MOST ironic however as that person you may be idolizing so much – who you may think is “practically perfect in every way” – They may be idolizing YOU!
We all complain and judge others around us that have the things we want in such a negative way. It’s such a vicious cycle that I see time and time again.
But as I said – we ALL feel this way! So why get down on yourself and then loath on other people.
Why not begin to love yourself first?
Don’t think of being in competition with the person next to you. You are only competing with one person and that’s yourself.
Strive to be the best YOU can be in all aspects of your life. Don’t let negative thinking drag you down. Look in the mirror – take a good hard look and LOVE YOURSELF!
Start with the places you love the most and begin to learn, love and accept the rest!
As I said before, negativity only breeds more negativity. Stop that cycle and start to feel happier today!

Santropol Roulant helps bring people together with their innovative wheels on meals service, intergenerational activities and volunteer programs.
With the help of this years Yoga Mala event they hope to raise just over $8000.
So what is “Yoga Mala”?
Yoga Malas, or Fundraisers, have been held over the last 4 years to help raise money for organizations such as Greenpeace, Équiterre, Amnesty International and Le Garde Manger Pour Tous.
The event itself is held in the park in which teachers from the nine different yoga traditions will lead and complete 108 sun salutations.
This year the Yoga Mala will be held at Jeanne Mance Park, corner Duluth and del’Esplanade, from 10am to 1pm on Sunday, May 29, 2011.
After the 108 sun salutations, participants will have the opportunity to rest, eat a healthy buffet-style meal and to participate in a raffle.

Aloe Vera Drink
On Friday at Mansfield I was given a free bottle of a new drink that we’re going to be selling at the restaurant called “Alo Exposed”.
I’m REALLY not that big on drinking anything other than water as I don’t see the necessity of all the extra sugar calories that are in juice, pop, vitamin water, etc.
Most of us don’t NEED all that sugar while we’re at the gym as our carbohydrate stores aren’t depleting as much as someone who is running a marathon.
However, here and there as a “treat” or after teaching two running clinics in a row I am prone to buying a Gatorade G2 or 10 Calorie Vitamin Water. There are dyes and a whole list of additives that I can’t pronounce the names of that are associated with these drinks.
Yes, I know it’s not ideal – but HEY! I’m not perfect!
So when I read the list of ingredients and caloric values of this new Alo Exposed Drink, I was impressed.
So wheres the “Caramel Color” or “Calcium disodium EDTA” or “Red 40″ as many other drinks have?
There is none! There are no preservatives, no artificial coloring or flavoring.
What about calories??
Yes – There is 120 calories per bottle.
I like the idea of having one of these instead of a Gatorade after teaching my classes for two hours.
The other reason I like it – The fact that it’s Aloe Vera of course!
The benefits of aloe vera are wonderful for digestion. Aloe contains natural digestive enzymes and is an anti-inflammatory.
So if you’re going to drink something other than water that’s going to have excess calories in it – I would choose this instead! At least you’re getting something out of it, it tastes GREAT and its sweetened naturally.
